Newspaper Headlines: Political parties demand probe of N3trn budget padding allegation

Reactions trailing the allegation of budget padding, the worsening electricity supply in the country, and rising insecurity, suffuse the front pages of the dailies. 

The Punch reports that major political parties have demanded a probe into the allegation made by Abdul Ningi, senator representing Bauchi central, that the 2024 budget was padded by N3.7 trillion. The newspaper says the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have declared a seven-day warning strike to protest their withheld four months salary.
Daily Trust reports that the junta in Niger Republic has agreed to release the ousted president of the country, Mohamed Bazoum, and his wife, Khadija. The newspaper says former President Muhammadu Buhari has said his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has performed very well since his assumption of office nine months ago.
The Guardian reports that investors may forfeit their dividends in the stock market as companies struggle to survive, amid Nigeria’s asphyxiating economy. The newspaper says Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has asked President Bola Tinubu to open the nation’s borders for massive importation, amid the food crisis in the country.
THISDAY reports Tinubu as saying that if governors could provide land, he would unveil a comprehensive plan that would solve the farmers/herders’ clashes in the country within two or three weeks. The newspaper says the federal government said it is not “sleeping” on the worsening power problem in the country.
