Newspaper Headlines: Presidential panels gulp N21bn in seven years

The launch of Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, ‘A Journey In Service’, permeates the frontpages of the dailies. 

The Punch reports that Babangida, a former military head of state, has expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, while acknowledging that MKO Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), won the poll. The newspaper says the cost of running key presidential committees since 2018 amounted to N21.17 billion.
Daily Trust reports that Lateef Fagbemi, the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), has appealed to Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, to direct the state electoral commission to put the forthcoming February 22 LGA elections on hold. The newspaper says Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, lawmaker representing Kogi central, on Thursday clashed during plenary over a change in seating arrangements.
The Nation reports the federal government has urged the Chinese government to remove trade tariffs for Nigeria. The newspaper says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has set its sights on reducing inflation to a single digit in the medium to long term, following the recent rebasing of the consumer price index (CPI).
Nigerian Tribune reports that the federal government has terminated the 98 kilometre Oyo-Ogbomoso road contract awarded to RCC construction company. The newspaper says the monetary policy committee (MPC) of the CBN has retained the monetary policy rate (MPR), which benchmarks interest rates in the country, at 27.50 percent.
