Newspaper Headlines: Resurgence of killings in north-central threaten Nigeria’s food security

Reports on the designation of portfolios to ministers by President Bola Tinubu, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that oil workers have demanded results as Tinubu assigned the petroleum ministry portfolio to himself. The newspaper says Taoreed Lagbaja, chief of army staff, has deployed more soldiers to Niger state following the killing of soldiers by bandits in an ambush.
Daily Independent says Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the party will merge with other political parties for the 2027 elections. The newspaper reports that Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers, has been assigned the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), while David Umahi is set to take over the works ministry.
ThisDay reports that the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reached a $3 billion deal with Afreximbank which will help stabilise the naira and ease the country’s forex crisis. The newspaper reports that President Tinubu; former President Goodluck Jonathan; among others, have felicitated with Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, on his 82nd birthday.

 

The Guardian reports that the resurgence of brutal killings in the north-central geo-political zone has become a major threat to food production in the region. The newspaper says the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) disclosed that the oil rig which capsized on Tuesday at Ovhor in Warri, Delta State, had been operating on the nation’s waters illegally since 2016.
