Newspaper Headlines: Russia, Ukraine trade words over alleged interference in Nigerian protests

The controversy trailing today’s LGA elections in Rivers state is the major issue on frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that there is tension and uncertainty in Rivers over the conduct of today’s LGA elections in the state. The newspaper says 42 bodies have been recovered from the water following a boat accident that occurred in Mokwa LGA of Niger state.
The Nation reports that Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and the Nigeria Police Force have clashed over an alleged plot to scuttle today’s LGA elections in the state. The newspaper says the federal government has exempted 63 items from value-added tax (VAT).
Vanguard reports that President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives. The newspaper says Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has apologised for his previous statement that non-tithers won’t make heaven.
THISDAY reports that leaders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are battling for the leadership control of the party ahead of the national executive committee (NEC) meeting on October 24, 2024. The newspaper says Bismarck Rewane, chief executive officer (CEO) of Financial Derivative, said prolonged monetary tightening could discourage investments and slow down economic growth.
