Newspaper Headlines: SGF, ministers to hold emergency meeting today over planned protest

Reports on the passage of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Amendment Act permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government has scheduled an emergency meeting for Wednesday morning in response to a planned nationwide protest slated for August 1. The newspaper says labour unions in the country said they will schedule meetings with state governments as part of efforts to ensure that they comply with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Amendment Act.
Daily Trust reports that President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to shelve the planned nationwide protest. The newspaper says the house of representatives has asked the federal government to suspend Farouk Ahmed, chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), over “unguarded comments” against Dangote refinery.
Vanguard reports that the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) have kicked against the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increase interest rate to 26.75 percent.
The Guardian reports that the national assembly has passed a bill seeking to allow the inspector-general of police (IGP) to remain in office “until the end of the term stipulated in his appointment letter”. The newspaper says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has backed the planned protest, while calling on the federal government to allow Nigerians exercise their constitutional rights.
