Newspaper Headlines: Southern, middle-belt leaders, bishops reject military action in Niger Republic

Reports on the political situation in Niger Republic, and the depreciation of the naira in the foreign exchange market, dominate the front pages of newspapers today.

The Punch reports that top diplomats from the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, will meet today in Abuja on the political development in Niger Republic. The newspaper says the federal government may stop Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Ports Authority, Nigerian Postal Service, and 60 other ministries, departments and agencies from collecting revenue.
Vanguard reports that Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, met with the coup leaders in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic, on Wednesday. The newspaper says Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has asked the court to stop the federal government from prosecuting him.
The Guardian reports that chairpersons of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in 10 states have called on Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, to stop parading himself as national leader of the party. The newspaper says the naira crashed to as low as N910/$ yesterday at the parallel market, as the market switched to panic mode.
Nigerian Tribune reports that southern and middle-belt leaders, Catholic bishops and Islamic clerics, have warned against military intervention in Niger Republic. The newspaper says Godswill Akpabio, senate president, has come under criticism for his comment on payment of allowances to senators.
Daily Independent says the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has opposed sanctions and military action against the coupists of Niger Republic. The newspaper reports that the Ekiti state government has approved the disbursement of N5,000 monthly palliative to 10,000 poor households in the state.
