Newspaper Headlines: States resist push to open CBN accounts for LGAs

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s condemnation of the state of emergency declared in Rivers suffuses the frontpages today. 

Punch says the presidency has faulted Jonathan and Wole Soyinka, the Nobel laureate, for condemning the suspension of elected officials in Rivers. The newspaper reports that the ambition of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the zoning dispute are stalling coalition negotiations among political leaders.
The Nation reports that state governments are resisting moves by the federal authorities to get the 774 LGAs to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The newspaper says Samuel Anyanwu, reinstated national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the campaign to dislodge him from his post stemmed from his friendship with Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).
Tribune says the federation account committee shared N1.678 trillion among the federal government, states and the local governments for the month of February. The newspaper reports that Solomon Dalung, former minister of sports, said many northern Nigerians who supported the Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023 are now regretting that decision.
