Newspaper Headlines: States’ salaries rise by 90% to N3.8trn after new minimum wage

Reports on the new minimum wage and the prolonged power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan perfuse the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that the amount budgeted for personnel costs, including salaries and allowances to state civil servants by the 36 state governments, has increased from N2.036 trillion spent in 2024 to N3.87 trillion in the approved 2025 budget. A member of the Kwankwasiya political group says Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), met with Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior, over how to harvest south-west votes in 2027.
Vanguard reports that the ‘japa’ trend among Nigerians, coupled with the underfunding of the government, is severely undermining the country’s healthcare system. The newspaper says Saudi Arabia has announced a new visa policy restricting visitors from Nigeria and 13 other countries to single-entry visas.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the controversy within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) persists over the decision of the party’s board of trustees (BoT) to back Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the national secretary. The newspaper says Ajibola Basiru, national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the party is set to hold its national executive committee (NEC) meeting after a series of postponements.
The Nation reports that the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) said the federal government is considering alternative funding for infrastructure through public-private partnerships (PPP) using the capital market. Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, said tax reforms will spark healthy economic competition among states.
