Newspaper Headlines: Terrorists abduct scores of female IDPs in Borno

Reports on the interception of 141 grain trucks over alleged smuggling of food to neighbouring countries, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government said it had so far intercepted 141 trucks attempting to smuggle grains and other staples to Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. The newspaper says the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) said 767 manufacturers shut down operations, while 335 became distressed, in 2023.
Daily Trust reports that Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly abducted dozens of female internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ngala, Borno state. The newspaper quotes Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, as saying that Israel must stop its war on Gaza, and that the world needs to drop its “double standard” over the killings of Palestinians.
The Guardian reports that Nigerians have switched to used gadgets as depreciation of the naira worsens the adoption of current mobile gadgets. The newspaper says the house of representatives has summoned Gboyega Oyetola, minister of blue economy, and Saidu Alkali, his transport counterpart, over alleged fraudulent concession of critical port infrastructure.
THISDAY reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said the recent increase in interest rate by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is a step in the right direction. The newspaper says the federal government has opened talks with the African Development Bank (AfDB) for possible funding of the construction of some sections of the coastal and trans-sahara highways in Nigeria and Cameroon.
