Newspaper Headlines: Tinubu engages Akande, Osoba on peace mission over Lagos assembly crisis

The latest political moves of Nasir el-Rufai and the national assembly’s commencement of hearing on the tax bills perfuse the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, over indications that he is rallying northern leaders and bigwigs against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. The newspaper says Tinubu has engaged chieftains of the APC to wade into the crisis rocking the Lagos state house of assembly.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has warned that the plan of the federal government to impose tax on free trade zones in the country could drive away over $200 billion in foreign direct investments from the country. The newspaper says gunmen on Friday invaded a church located in Asagba Ogwashi in the Aniocha south LGA of Delta state, shot a pastor, and abducted six worshippers.
Daily Trust reports that Bismarck Rewane, the chief executive officer of Financial Derivatives Company, said the federal government spent approximately $8 billion to stabilise the naira. Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, said his refinery has more than half a billion litres of petroleum to sufficiently meet the local needs of Nigeria, the newspaper says.
THISDAY reports that Ibrahim Babangida, in his autobiography, disclosed that one of the reasons he led the overthrow of Muhammadu Buhari as head of state in 1985 was the latter’s holier-than-thou attitude. The newspaper says Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, has asked newly elected council chairpersons in the state not to resume at the LGA secretariats to avoid any clashes with members of the opposition.
