Newspaper Headlines: Traders divert food items to Niger Republic, Cameroon

Reports on the food crisis, and the decision of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to lift sanctions imposed on junta-led countries, dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that traders who deal in grains have devised a way to sell their wares to neighbouring countries for higher profits amid the slide of the naira. The newspaper says the federal government has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve its proposed nationwide protest.
Daily Trust reports that Nigeria has agreed to restore electricity supply to Niger Republic after ECOWAS lifted the sanctions on the country, Mali and Burkina-Faso. The newspaper says state governors continue to appoint LGA caretaker chairpersons in place of elected ones, contrary to a supreme court judgment.
The Guardian reports that there are indications that the federal government’s efforts towards providing solutions to the current food crisis may yield little harvest. The newspaper says Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of Ondo, has declared his intention to contest the November governorship election in the state.
The Nation reports that Lateef Fagbemi, the attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, says there is a subsisting court order restraining labour from embarking on any industrial action. The newspaper reports that Philip Shaibu, deputy governor of Edo, has alleged that there is a fresh plot to impeach him.
THISDAY reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it received N313.4 billion from the federal government for the 2023 election. The newspaper says the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in its preliminary report on the crash that killed Herbert Wigwe, group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc, and five others, said adverse weather exacerbated by rain and snow led to the crash of the chopper.
