Newspaper Headlines: Transporters, labour unions reject highway tolling

The president’s request for an increase of the 2025 appropriation bill prominently features on the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

THISDAY reports that President Bola Tinubu has increased the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion. The newspaper says the Dangote refinery has announced that it successfully exported two jet fuel cargoes to Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer based in Saudi Arabia.
The Punch reports that at least 17 students have been confirmed dead following a fire outbreak at an Almajiri school in Kaura-Namoda LGA of Zamfara state. The newspaper says transporters and labour unions have condemned the reintroduction of highway tolls, stating that it would further worsen the hardship in the country.
The Nation reports that the senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to terminate the appointments of suspended resident electoral commissioners (RECs) in charge of Sokoto, Abia and Adamawa states. The newspaper says the Julius Abure-led national working committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) has accused the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) of trying to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the board of trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recognised Sunday Ude-Okoye as the substantive national secretary of the party. The newspaper says Tinubu has approved an increase in the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years.
