NGO launches recycling project to empower women

GreeningUp Africa, a non-governmental organisation, has launched the Green Impact Nigeria project to empower women in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The initiative, supported by Climate-KIC, Europe’s leading environmental innovation agency, and funded by Irish Aid, is aimed at boosting the economic resilience of women by integrating recycling into their daily lives.

Speaking at an event to mark the 2025 Global Recycling Day, Victor Akinmuyiwa, GreeningUp Africa’s executive director, said empowering women helps in waste management and also boosts economic growth.

Akinmuyiwa reiterated the organisation’s commitment to creating inclusive climate solutions.

“Women are at the heart of sustainable development. Empowering them with the right tools and opportunities significantly helps to tackle waste management and also drive economic growth and gender equality,” Akinmuyiwa said.

Also speaking, Omolayo Oyelakin, co-founder and sustainability development coordinator of the organisation, noted that recycling is not just about the environment but also the economic inclusion and resilience it offers to the people.

“When women are given access to sustainable opportunities, they transform entire communities. At GreeningUp Africa, we are committed to ensuring that women have the resources they need to thrive,” Oyelakin said.
