NGO seeks more access to justice, review of legal processes for PWDs

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) says equitable access to the justice system and a comprehensive review of legal processes will enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Friday, Christiana Njoku, the programme officer at CCD, said access to justice is one of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) promoting peaceful and disability-friendly societies.

Njoku said access to justice by PWDs would allow them to seek legal solutions and participate fully in the process.

“Justice is crucial for equal protection for PWDs. Several barriers persist for people living with disabilities in accessing justice,” she said.

“There are still critical gaps and hindrances that affect their ability to fully participate in legal proceedings.

“Many facilities in places where justice is being administered lack adequate physical accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, accessible parking spaces, restrooms, and signs for direction.

“The physical infrastructure barriers prevent people living with disabilities, particularly those with mobility impairments, from entering and navigating these spaces independently.”
