EHealth Africa, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has established emergency operation centres in Kebbi and Zamfara states to support the fight against polio disease.

Judith Owoicho, communications manager of eHealth Africa, said the project was part of the organisation’s mission to build stronger health systems through innovative strategies.

The projects were executed in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Aliko Dangote Foundation.

Atef Fawaz, executive director of eHealth Africa, said the centres were established to enable the states to prepare for emergency health situations.

“This experience of over a decade has positioned the organisation to understand and effectively implement an intervention of this magnitude,” he said.

“This is another milestone in our consistent resolve to support public health stakeholders in effective planning and coordination of emergency preparedness and response, especially as Nigeria continues to win the fight against polio and vaccine preventable diseases.”

Also speaking, Kazeem Balogun, senior program manager, said the centres are equipped with contemporary tools to ensure effective emergency response.

“It is our standard to always acquire modern-day equipment that will facilitate better planning, coordination and effective utilization of data for informed public health emergency response,” Balogun said.

“We are proud to be a leader in the establishment and management of the Polio Emergency Operation Centers (PEOCs) that have played a transformative role in Nigeria’s public health landscape.

“Through tactical strategies and innovative solutions, the PEOCs have ensured polio and other emergency interventions reach beneficiaries especially in remote areas.

“As we strive to create a world free from polio, we are optimistic that the PEOCs will continue to lead the way, leaving a lasting impact on future generations.”
