NGOs organise spelling bee to mark Children’s Day in Lagos community

Children Empowerment Fund (CEF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) focused on education, in partnership with Doxa Foundation organised a spelling bee competition for primary school pupils in the Makoko area of Lagos.

The spelling competition which featured four schools from the community took place on Thursday.

The schools are Adekunle Anglican primary school, Makoko primary school, Aiyetoro African Church primary school and Fazil Omar primary school.

Ogbonna Ebube, Adam Noah and Al-Amin Zubair of Fazil Omar school took first, second and fourth position respectively while Dele OgoOluwa of Makoko primary school finished with the third prize.

David Oluwaseun Joseph, co-founder of Doxa Foundation, said the spelling competition was organised as a “reach out to children in less-privileged areas”.

He added that quality education should be the right of every child irrespective of their background or immediate environment.

“The idea is to basically reach out to children in less-privileged areas and Makoko is one of such. Speaking with one of the teachers, we get to know that they need more of this. And there’s no better way to celebrate Children’s Day than giving them an opportunity to better themselves,” Joseph said.

“It’s important that education is taken very seriously If only a privileged few are the beneficiaries of quality education while others are neglected, they will be an imbalance. In fact, those that are lacking will end up influencing others. We are trying to create something of a balance and give the opportunity to those who strive.”
