NHRC: Over 2m petitions on human rights violations received in 2024

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it received over two million human rights violation complaints in 2024.

Anthony Ojukwu, the executive secretary (ES) of the NHRC, spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the presentation of the December dashboard report on human rights violations in the country.

The dashboard is a monthly analysis and graphical presentation of the human rights situation in Nigeria.

The commission launched the dashboard observatory on February 14, 2024.

Ojukwu said the dashboard is not meant for the collection of data only but as “a stern call to action and a powerful tool for advocacy”.

“Each number represents the voice of a citizen; each statistic points to a broader story of rights, violations, and the urgent need for accountability,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“Through this monthly process, the commission has consistently provided a comprehensive overview of human rights concerns.

“It details complaints received from across the country, as well as tracked incidents of human rights violations.

“By doing so, we aim to offer a vital resource to all those working to advance human rights in Nigeria.

“These findings have not only captured the attention of stakeholders but also triggered meaningful discussions and actions on pressing human rights issues.

“The commission remained resolute in our mission to chart the way forward for Nigeria’s human rights landscape.”

He said the assessment is a major flagship through which the commission fulfills its “sacred mandate”.

“In December 2024 alone, the NHRC received a staggering 355,726 complaints of human rights violations,” he said.

“This marks an overwhelming increase from the 1,147 complaints reported in January of the same year.

“We received over two million complaints of human rights violations in 2024.”
