NHRC: Report on army’s operations in north-east will be publicised

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says the report of an independent investigation into the army’s counter-insurgency operations in the north-east will be widely publicised.

Tony Ojukwu, executive secretary of the commission, gave the assurance on Thursday when he received a delegation of the Nigerian army led by Saidu Inaboya, acting director of legal service, in Abuja.

In December 2022, Reuters published a report alleging that the Nigerian military carried out illegal abortions on victims of insurgency in the north-east.

The report led to the inauguration of a seven-member panel by the NHRC to probe the allegations.

Ojukwu said the panel’s proceedings were well publicised, adding that only testimonies of whistleblowers were concealed.

The executive secretary said it is important for officers of the army to be trained on human rights, adding that the training will make an “unquantifiable” impact on their operations.

He assured the Nigerian military and members of the public that “there is a very high level of transparency in all that the commission does”.
