Nigeria beats Spain to seal quarter-final place at ITTF World Team Championships

Nigeria had a smooth ride to the quarter-final of the second division at the ITTF World Team Championships.

The Nigerian team recorded a 3-1 win over Spain in the last 16 tie played at the Halmstad Arena, Sweden.

The trio of Aruna Quadri, Segun Toriola and Bode Abiodun humbled Spaniards Carlos Machado, Alvaro Robles and Jesus Cantero.

Nigeria will now meet Slovakia in the quarter-final.

Egypt’s quest to remain in the championship division suffered another setback as their men and women’s teams lost 3-1 to Belarus and Russia respectively in the classification tie.

The fate of the Egyptians will be decided when the final classification matches are concluded on Friday.

Congo Brazzaville failed to advance to the last eight of the third division after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat.

The quarter-final matches of the championship and second division will be played on Friday.

The competition ends on Sunday, May 6 with two teams getting a promotion to the upper division, while two teams will be relegated to the lower divisions from the three tiers.
