Sam Ohuabunwa, presidential aspirant on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2023, says Nigeria is gradually becoming a one-party state.

The economist spoke on ‘Prime Time’, an Arise TV programme, on Wednesday.

“I think the political environment in Nigeria is, you could say, agitated. It’s agitated because we have the migration of people who after every election, migrate, you know, due to what Ayo Fayose called the stomach infrastructure,” he said.

“But I also believe that the unstoppable and unending crisis in the opposition parties, PDP leading and other ones, have also worsened the state.

“So you do not find any substantial opposition, really. The opposition is brittle. In some parties, when you leave one or two persons, nothing is heard about what the government is doing, or criticising, or even reviewing or critiquing.

“So, we are gradually emerging to a one-party state in effect. The APC has no heat being given by anybody. In my view, there is no current opposition that places policy against policy and providing what will be the alternative.”

He said the APC is getting away with a lot of things “because there is no strong opposition in the country”.

“People who we thought will oppose them are migrating into the same party,” he added.
