Senate President Bukola Saraki has described the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as “stinking,” a euphemism for corruption, while calling for an investigation of the organisation over alleged financial irregularity.
Saraki said this after the senate passed a motion to mandate its committee on customs, excise and tariff to carry out an investigation into the activities of the organisation with a view to identifying leakages and irregularities as well as the declining revenue profile of the service.
“That place is stinking. Just last week we heard the former customs boss returned N1bn. The NCS should be investigated,” Saraki said.
In the motion, Isaac Mohammed Alfa, a senator from Kogi east and sponsor, said the customs recorded a revenue shortfall of N230bn in the last quarter of 2015.

He alleged that the revenue shortfall was a result of “unwholesome fraudulent trade malpractices, under declaration, abuse of fiscal policies, concealment, over and under invoicing, false declaration of value and wrong classification.”
He, therefore, asked the upper legislative chamber to investigate the service.
The senate passed the motion thereafter.
