Nigeria has over 320 unmanned border routes, says retired NIS chief

Sunday Fagbamigbe, a retired assistant comptroller-general (ACG) of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), says the country has more than 320 unmanned illegal routes at its borders.

Fagbamigbe spoke in an interview on Friday with NAN in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state.

He said the illegal routes “provide avenues for insecurity, proliferation of arms, and dumping of unwholesome goods in the country”.

The retired ACG said that the porous borders had also encouraged the spate of illegal drugs and human trafficking all over the country.

He urged the federal government to procure and install advanced equipment at the nation’s borders to strengthen security.

Fagbamigbe said modern surveillance equipment is necessary due to the insecurity challenges facing the country.

He noted that border policing has moved from the deployment of personnel to surveillance equipment for efficient operations.

He added that technologies like electronic sensors, video monitors, and night vision scopes to detect illegal entries had proven more effective in advanced countries.

“We have to take seriously border management security, and work with border communities,” Fagbamigbe added.

“We must create a sense of awareness and collaboration.”

He noted that Nigeria lacks sufficient security personnel to safeguard the existing illegal routes across its borders.
