Nigeria thrash Niger Republic 9-0 in WAFU B U-17 girls’ cup

Shakirat Moshood (centre in jersey number 8) celebrates one of her four goals in Flamigos 9-0 victory over the Niger Republic in the 2024 WAFU B U-17 Girls' Cup.

Nigeria’s Flamingos trounced Niger Republic 9-0 in their opening game at the 2024 WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup.

Shakirat Moshood scored four goals, Janet Akekoromowei scored hattrick, and Peace Effiong and Aisha Animashaun scored one each in a one-sided match at the Ghanaian Soccer Centre of Excellence (GSCE) in Prampram on Thursday.

Flamingos comprise the team’s core that recently represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA Women’s under-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic. Bankole Olowookere and his girls crashed out of the World Cup in the quarter-final, but they demonstrated their resolve against the Niger Republic.

Animashaun scored the game’s first goal after only five minutes. She was found at the Nigerien’s six-yard box by an in-swinger from Mary Mamudu, and Animashaun stabbed the ball home from close range.

Moshood opened her account in the 7th minute with a 35-yard screamer that sailed above Ndiaye Fatai Basiru, the Nigerien goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, another long-range shot resulted in Moshood’s second goal of the game before Akekoromowei made it four shortly.

Akekoromowei was on the score sheet for the second time in the 42nd minute after dribbling through the Nigerien defence, and she nicked hattrick almost immediately after with a powerful header.

Moshood scored Nigeria’s seventh goal immediately after halftime. She scored her fourth goal after collecting the ball high up the pitch and making a solo drive to fire past Ndiaye.

Effiong then completed the onslaught late in the game.

The Flamingos will play Cote d’Ivoire on Monday in their other match in Group B of the competition.
