Oluyemisi Adeaga, president of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), has called for an urgent shift towards local funding sources for humanitarian aid.
In a statement on Wednesday by Chima Nwankwo, the coordinator for communications and advocacy, Adeaga lamented the withdrawal of funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
He said the recent funding cuts from international donors represent both a challenge and an opportunity for Nigerian humanitarian organisations.
“The recent withdrawal of USAID funding is a significant blow to humanitarian efforts, further limiting resources for those in dire need,” he said.

“Yet, despite these daunting obstacles, we do not despair. The Nigerian Red Cross Society—a sure sign of hope—remains steadfast, committed to becoming a dynamic voluntary aid organisation that leads in the satisfaction of humanitarian needs and protects the dignity of the most vulnerable communities to build resilience.”
The NRCS officially inducted Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, as its newest brand ambassador.
Speaking after the induction, Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi said she would use her platform to amplify the urgent need for local support in humanitarian efforts.

“Joining the Nigerian Red Cross Society as a brand ambassador is both an honour and a call to action,” she said.
“I intend to use my voice, my platform, and my network to amplify the urgent need for local support in humanitarian efforts.
“This is not just about giving—it is about building a culture of compassion and responsibility.
“Everywhere I look, I see people in need—women, children, and entire communities struggling to survive. How can I turn away?
