Nigerian Red Cross visits Ooni, appeals for local support amid funding challenges

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) says the organisation urgently needs more local support due to a “critical funding shortfall”.

Speaking during a visit to Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, on Saturday, Oluyemisi Adeaga, president of the NRCS, expressed concern about “insufficient” government funding, leaving the organisation dependent on foreign aid.

On March 7, Adeaga lamented the funding withdrawal by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He said recent donor cuts pose challenges but also create opportunities for Nigerian humanitarian organisations.

“We survive largely through international assistance because the three tiers of government have stopped supporting us,” Adeaga said.

“We are here to seek your collaboration and ask that you connect us with individuals and government bodies that can support our work.”

On his part, Ogunwusi welcomed the delegation, reiterated his steadfast support for the NRCS, acknowledged its vital humanitarian role, and emphasised the need for increased public involvement.

“Technology has revolutionized humanitarian services. Stop acting like you are in 1950,” the Ooni said.

“You must engage the public on what you are doing. Without proper communication, the Nigerian Red Cross Society will suffer.”

Ogunwusi said the NRCS would face challenges without strong communication while imploring it to leverage digital platforms and partnerships to enhance visibility, engagement, and support.

He also emphasised on the importance of accountability and asked the NRCS to uphold transparency in all its operations to enhance trust and credibility.
