The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the deadline for Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) of Nigerian bank customers in the Diaspora to January 31, 2016.
Ibrahim Mu’azu, the bank’s director of corporate communications, confirmed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.
Mu’azu explained that the extension was to enable the customers in Diaspora to complete the enrollment as well as link the BVN to their respective accounts.
He said the extension was only for customers in the Diaspora and advised Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to ensure that the exemption was utilised by the targeted group only.

“The CBN has also expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the implementation of the BVN project, especially for accounts operated by residents of Nigeria,” the statement read.
“However, with the expiration of the October 31 enrollment deadline, the CBN has directed that bank accounts of Nigeria residents without the BVN would henceforth be operated as `no customers initiated debit’.
“That is until the account holders obtain and attach BVNs to the accounts. This means that a customer may not be allowed to withdraw money from his or her account until the BVN has been acquired and linked to the account.”

The statement clarified that accounts of Nigeria residents without BVN would continue to receive cash and electronic credit inflows and would neither be deactivated nor confiscated.
It therefore advised the deposit money banks to educate their customers accordingly and also advised the banks to remind their customers of the need to link their BVN with their accounts if they had done the enrollment at another bank.

I live in TX. I have tried in many occasions to schedule a date for this BVN but all the dates for Houston, TX are taken to JANUARY 31, 2016. Many Nigerians live in TX and I don’t understand why the number and personnel allocated to Houston, TX are too small. Please consider extending the date for Houston TX to be fair to us that live here.
Dear CBN, the most painful thing is that most despite travelling from distant place of business to where my bank branches are located in accra, UBA, ZENITH, ECOBANK, and UNION BANK have mo idea on this BVN here in Ghana and don’t register people. it pains me the most that while I have accounts with popular big banks like this and yet nowhere to register BVN with any of their branches. All efforts to get a place of registration proved abortive.. I am not surprised that my accounts were blocked by mostly angry that this popular big bank don’t realize that thousands of Nigerian are in Ghana and actually don’t have a perfect time to travel back to register bvn. It would have been more easier for everyone had all this branches over here participate in the registration.
However, my flight was delayed yesterday and I am just hearing people gossiping about this BVN deadline to be January 31st, 2016. SHOCKINGLY I BROWSED THR WEB ONLY TO DISCOVER IT’S TRUE JUST WHEN AM AT THE POINT OF STEPPING INTO NIGERIA FOR BVN SAKE. I DON’T THINK CBN WILL BE WICKED ENOUGH TO JUST CANCEL OR DELETE PEOPLES ACCOUNT COS OF THIS FAILURE OF MEETING UP WITH DEADLINE. I PRAY THAT GOD WILL TOUCH THE HEART OF CBN TO EXTEND IT’S DEADLINE TO 5TH OF FEBRUARY, 2016 TO ENABLE OTHERS WHO ARE YET TO ENROLL MEET UP.
PLEASE DEAR CBN, KINDLY GRANT YOUR PEOPLE ONE MORE CHANCE TO MEET UP WITH REGISTRATION. PLEASE FIND A PLACE IN YOUR HEART IN TO CONSIDER OUR DEMANDS.. THE FAULT WAS ACTUALLY FROM THE BRANCHES WE ENROLLED WITH. PLEASE DO EXTEND TO ONE MORE WEEK.
THANKS AND REMAIN BLESSED.
