Nigeria’s mixed 4×400 metres relay team has secured the berth to represent the country at the Olympic games.

The team, which comprises Nse Imaobong, Patience Okon-George, Nathaniel Samson, and Chidi Okezie, achieved the feat by running a season’s best of 3:14,09 at the Making Of Champions relay meet in Lagos on Sunday.

The performance registered as a new national record and sent them above Ukraine and the Czech Republic on the World Athletics top list for the Olympic games. The qualification window was set to close on June 29.

The competition was the final opportunity for the team to secure its participation at the Olympics after missing out on the World Relays in Poland last month.

The team had failed to post the required time at the national trials last weekend and at the Lagos Open Athletics a few days later.

The group becomes Nigeria’s third relay team to book a ticket to the Olympic games. The women’s 4×100 meters and 4×400 metres teams had earlier secured their appearance at the event.

Meanwhile, the men’s 4×100 metres team missed qualification by whiskers yet again.

The team, which comprises Adegoke Enoch, Jerry Jakpa, Usheoritse Itshekiri and Godson Brume, clocked a season’s best of 38.56, but it was a fraction of time too late to get them into the qualification top list.
