NIHSA: River Benue water level receding… possibility of severe flooding reducing

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) says the possibility of “devastating flooding” along the River Benue basin is dwindling.

On September 17, the management of Lagdo Dam in Cameroon began a regulated water release into Nigeria.

Following the development, the federal government alerted residents of affected states of imminent flooding.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Umar Mohammed, NIHSA’s director-general, said the water level has receded “minimally”.

“NIHSA has observed that in the past few days, the water level of River Benue has minimally receded. With this development, the probability of a devastating flooding along the Benue River basin is gradually eroding,” the statement reads.

The NIHSA DG advised the public to remain vigilant as there are uncertainties of flooding due to climate change.

He said the agency will continue to monitor the water levels to ensure flood is mitigated.

“Nevertheless, due to the versatility of the variability of climate, the agency advises Nigerians to remain vigilant and keep observing the flood resilience protocols, as we go about our lawful business,” Mohammed said.

“The agency maintains close collaboration with the management of Lagdo Dam located at the Benue River basin, for their releases, managing of the water conveyed through the basin, as well as monitoring the water levels – in the morning, afternoon and evening – at critical stations.
