NiMet predicts three days of cloudiness, dust haze across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze, cloudiness and thunderstorms across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet predicted a hazy and cloudy atmosphere over the northern region throughout the forecast period.

The agency said moderate dust haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2km to 4km is anticipated over the north-central and the inland areas of the south.

NiMet said the north will experience cloudy skies in a hazy atmosphere prevailing over the area.

The agency added that thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Rivers, Imo, Edo, Bayelsa and other southern states during the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet predicted patches of cloud in a hazy atmosphere over the inland areas of the south and the coast during the forecast period.

“For Thursday, dust haze is expected over the north which should bring horizontal visibility down to around 2-4km, but could be slightly poorer in some place, Slight dust haze should be over the north central, cloudiness with spells of sunshine to the south, and prospects of thunderstorm are expected over parts of Ondo, Osun Rivers, Delta Bayelsa, Lagos and Ogun states,” the forecast reads.

“For Friday, poorer horizontal visibility resulting from dust haze is anticipated over the north and parts of the north central states. Sunshine with increased cloudiness is expected over the south with thunderstorms likely over parts of Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Edo, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the afternoon and evening hours.

“On Saturday dust haze should still prevail over the north and parts of North central with prospect of increased cloudiness over parts of Kogi, Kwara, Benue and southern states. Thunderstorm is equally expected in parts of Imo, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River states.”

NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions to manage the heat stress and asked persons with respiratory ailments to protect themselves.

Airline operators were also advised to avail themselves of weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.
