The .ng domain name, Nigeria’s internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD), has surged to 215,441 registrations.
Adesola Akinsanya, president of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), said this during the association’s 16th annual general meeting (AGM) in Lagos recently.
Reporting on the executive board of directors’ (EBoD’s) activities over the past year, Akinsanya said by February 2024, NiRA registrars had registered 215,441 .ng domain names, adding that ccTLD has become increasingly popular for websites and email addresses.
The NiRA boss praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the renewed hope agenda, which aims to enhance the citizens’ well-being by leveraging the digital economy.

He also praised Bosun Tijani, minister of communications and digital economy, for his understanding of the importance of promoting the adoption of ccTLD both within and outside government circles.
Akinsanya said NiRA supports the minister in his efforts to promote transparency in governance, protect Nigerian cyberspace, and advance the digital Nigeria agenda.
He said NiRA has received strong support from the Kashifu Inuwa-led National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), particularly in advocating for both public and private organisations to adopt the .ng domain.

“The need for both the government and private institutions to switch over to .ng brand is no longer negotiable in view of the significant role it plays in the country’s digital economy agenda,” Akinsanya said.
He said 22 new registrars were accredited last year, “showing the collective efforts of NiRA accredited registrars and their resellers, which are duly acknowledged and appreciated”.
“Our commitment to nurturing a robust partnership with our accredited registrars remains unwavering,” he said.
“The establishment of the registrar’s relationship manager position exemplified this dedication, as it provides a specialized resource to address registrars’ needs and to cultivate stronger bonds among stakeholders.

Also speaking, Ibukun Odusote, chairperson, NIRA board of trustees, thanked the staff for their dedication and contributions, saying that their commitment has been key to the organisation’s ongoing success and growth.
Odusote urged them to unite as a community to exchange ideas, insights, and experiences, and to reaffirm their shared vision and mission.
