The National Judicial Council (NJC) has criticised some states for failing to pay the benefits due to retired judges in their jurisdictions.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Soji Oye, NJC spokesperson, said the issue was discussed at the council’s 100th meeting held on January 19.

He said the NHC “deliberated on the worrisome situation whereby many judicial officers of the states are being owed their retirement benefits, including severance pay/gratuity and pensions”.

“After due consideration, Council condemns in very strong terms this act, which is undermining the Rule of Law and Section 6 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999,” he added.

Consequently, the NJC asked erring states to ensure payment of all benefits entitled to retired judges.

“It, therefore, calls on the offending states to ensure that all entitlement of retired judges are fully settled forthwith,” he said.

Oye added that the NJC has directed state chief judges to file reports on compliance and submit them before April 1.
