NLC, TUC meet FG over petrol price hike

The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently meeting with the federal government over the hike in petrol price.

The meeting is taking place at the office of George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

Officials at the meeting are Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, minister of state for labour and employment; Wale Edun, minister of finance; Mohammed Idris, minister of information; and Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA).

Last Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited increased the price of petrol across its retail outlets.

The product is now being sold between N998 and N1,003 per litre — a development that has led to an increase in transport fares across the country.

Labour unions in the country have rejected the petrol price hike, saying it goes against its agreement with the federal government during negotiations for a new minimum wage.
