Nn’emeka Maduegbuna faults police over escape of Anambra lawmaker’s alleged killers

Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, the communications consultant, says the killing of Justice Azuka, a member of Anambra state house of assembly, has weakened public confidence in Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.

On December 24, 2024, Azuka was attacked and abducted by gunmen on his way home for the Christmas celebration.

His decomposing body was later found on the Second Niger Bridge, after more than two months in captivity.

On February 19, the Anambra police command said two suspected killers of the lawmaker have escaped from custody.

In a statement on Monday, Maduegbuna said investigation into the killing of the lawmaker has been “marred by inefficiency” following the escape of the suspects.

“The gruesome murder of Justice Azuka, a respected member of the Anambra state legislature, sent shockwaves throughout Nigeria,” the statement reads.

“The subsequent investigation, marred by controversy and inefficiency, has only served to exacerbate the pain and outrage felt by the nation.

“As we await justice, the wheels of progress turn slowly. The police investigation, once hailed as a beacon of hope, has stuttered, and stalled.”

Maduegbuna noted that the escape of the suspects will further embolden criminals, and increase lawlessness in the country.

Maduegbuna called on both federal and state governments to prioritise the safety and well-being of its citizens to rebuild their trust.

“The escape of key suspects, despite being in police custody, raises disturbing questions about the competence and integrity of our law enforcement agencies,” Maduegbuna added.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the systemic flaws that plague our justice system.

“Let us work together to build a Nigeria where the rule of law is upheld, and where citizens can trust in the integrity and competence of our law enforcement agencies.”
