The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says it has partnered with the US state department to advance collaboration on several methane abatement initiatives aimed at reducing emissions in Nigeria’s energy sector.
In a statement on Thursday, the NNPC said Robert Leahman, US state department’s global methane programme manager, and the Deloitte team met with Mele Kyari, NNPC’s group chief executive officer, at the oil firm’s headquarters in Abuja.
“In partnership with U.S. organizations such as Deloitte and the Bureau of Energy Resources, NNPC Ltd. has launched a methane abatement pilot project in the Niger Delta,” the statement reads.
“This project focuses on establishing emissions baselines, reducing methane leaks, and scaling sustainable practices across operations.

“These efforts align with Nigeria’s ambitious targets to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2031 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.”
The NNPC said they also underscore the nation’s leadership in Africa under the “Global Methane Pledge”, illustrating a commitment to tackling climate change and advancing energy sector sustainability.
In December 2023, the NNPC expressed commitment to reducing methane emissions and achieving zero-flare in its operations by 2030.

The energy firm made the commitment after an oil and gas decarbonisation charter was released on the sidelines of the United Nations climate change conference (COP28), in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
