No confirmed casualty as truck plunges into river in Lagos

A sand-laden truck on Friday fell off the Berger bridge into the Epe river in Lagos state.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

The agency identified the vehicle as a six-wheel Volvo tipper.

It said rescue operators could not get access to the river upon arrival at the scene of the accident on Friday night.

It added the number of casualties is yet unknown, adding that rescue operation is in progress.

“Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it, was discovered that a six (6) Tyre Truck loaded with Sand fell into the river,” said Nosa Okunbor, head of public affairs, LASEMA.

“Number of people in the truck can’t be ascertained presently.

“The LRT, Nigeria Police and Local divers are responders at the scene and effort are ongoing to recover the truck, but the local divers said the river can’t be accessed tonight

“Since the early hours of the morning, a combined team of Agency responders, Marine Rescue Unit, Nigeria Police and Local Divers have been carrying out Search and Rescue.

“No deaths or casualties confirmed yet.”
