Amnesty International (AI) Nigeria has called on Nigerians to continue to resist the oppression from powerful over the poor in the country.

Awwal Rafsanjani, chairman of AI Nigeria’s board of trustees, gave the charge in a video released on Sunday.

The footage follows the release of Aminu Muhammad, a student of Federal University Dutse (FUD), who was arrested for criticising Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Twitter.

Amid the outrage, Aisha withdrew the suit against him on Friday.

Speaking on the development, Rafsanjani commended Nigerians for standing up against “oppression and repression.”

He then added that future occurrences that seek to “brutalise and undermine the fundamental human rights of Nigerians” must be resisted.

“On behalf of AI Nigeria, I want to thank Nigerians who have come out in mass to demand the release and respect of Aminu Muhammad, who was illegally arrested and detained and beaten up by overzealous people,” he said.

“AI salutes the courage of Nigerians and their resilience for the release of Aminu Muhammad. We will continue to promote and defend the right of every Nigerian.

“Many times, some powerful individuals in Nigeria connive with security agencies to brutalise and undermine the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.

“This repression and oppression of Nigerians, especially the poor, must be resisted. There must be respect for rule of law and the human rights of every Nigerian.”
