Persons with albinism in Nigeria have criticised Nollywood for its negative portrayal of their community.

Speaking at a recent webinar, albinism advocates expressed concerns over the social stigma, human rights abuses, and life-threatening health risks they face.

They said the portrayal of members of the community in Nollywood movies “reinforces harmful stereotypes and fuels discrimination”.

The community argued that Nollywood’s “frequent depiction” of persons with albinism as “supernatural beings” or “figures of ridicule” worsens societal prejudice and deepens their struggles.

Ishola Omotola, an advocate, said the film industry has played a major role in shaping public perception, often portraying people with albinism in ways that “dehumanise” them.

Bisi Bamishe, president of the Association of Albinism of Nigeria, highlighted the broader challenges faced by the community, including the high cost of healthcare and limited government support.

Other speakers at the webinar called for media advocacy to change public perceptions, better representation in the entertainment industry, and policies that address the challenges persons with albinism face, including access to affordable healthcare and employment opportunities.

They urged Nollywood filmmakers to take responsibility for their influence and ensure that their portrayals do not contribute to discrimination.
