Northern group begins #ReleaseOurGirls campaign

Arewa Political Women Frontier, (APWF), a group comprising women from all the 19 northern states, on Monday staged a protest against the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram.

According to coordinator of the group, Mrs. Ramatu Mohammed, the group converged on the Unity Fountain, Abuja, to protest against Boko Haram’s onslaughts.

She said that the northern women had to come together to speak out against the crisis in the region because of their unhappiness with the current situation.

She added that in all the confusion, the group would continue to back the president and the military in their fight against terrorism.

A crowd of people donning red shirts strutted around the venue, chanting, “Release our girls now” in consonance with the group’s hash tag, #ReleaseOurGirlsNow.

Friday Adayi, one of the University of Abuja students who participated in the protest, said that they had come out to “condemn what is not good” [Boko Haram] and to show solidarity with their “fellow students” in captivity.

Arewa Political Women Frontier is the latest group to join the Grand Alliance Against Terrorism (GAAT), which staged a protest on Saturday against Boko Haram.

Before the emergence of these two groups, the original protesters who besieged the Unity Fountain were directing their ire at government, saying efforts to rescue the girls needed to be stepped up.
