Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has expressed dissatisfaction over the dilapidated condition of the state-owned Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (MAWTH).
Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to the governor, said in a statement on Saturday that Yusuf spoke when he led some government officials on an unscheduled visit to the healthcare facility.
Yusuf said as a teaching hospital for the training of medical professionals and provision of tertiary healthcare, the facility needs to be overhauled and expanded.
The governor added that the maternity services and child care unit need greater attention.

“It is disheartening to meet the hospital that caters for the medical needs of thousands of patients daily in a condition uncomfortable for human habitation, a situation that needs to be checked and corrected,” the governor was quoted as saying.
“I do instruct the management of the hospital to as a matter of urgency forward the request for rehabilitation and expansion of the hospital for immediate action to restore the lost glory of the gigantic health facility.”
Yusuf urged the medical personnel of all cadres in the hospital to be at their duty posts at the appropriate time.

The governor also asked them to discharge their duties “according to stipulated rules for the betterment of people of the state and beyond who visit the hospital to access care”.
Yusuf said his leadership would do all that it takes in the execution of policies that have a direct impact on the lives of people of the state — especially the downtrodden.
