The Interim Management Committee (IMC) has announced that the Super Six playoff of the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season will kick off on May 19.

In a statement on its Facebook page on Wednesday, IMC said the tourney would be hosted at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

“The Super 6 Playoff scheduled tentatively to hold at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Arena, Onikan, Lagos would commence on Friday, May 19,” the statement reads.

Due to late commencement, the NPFL was changed into an abridged format at the beginning of the season. All 20 clubs were drawn into two groups — A and B — with ten sides in each group.

Speaking on the final lap of the regular season, Davidson Owumi, head of operations for IMC, said the Group A matches would be concluded by May 14.

He added that the date for the conclusion of the Group B round of matches cannot be determined yet, but the committee would ensure the commencement of the playoff.

“The Group A matches will be concluded on Sunday, May 14 and we are looking forward to having the other two outstanding matches of Rivers United completed within the available windows to ensure that Group B’s last fixtures are held before the Playoff kickoff date,” he said.

Bendel Insurance, Enyimba and Remo Stars are the leaders of group A with two games to go.

In Group B, Lobi Stars, Doma United and Abia Warriors are the top teams.

The top three teams from each group will play in a round-robin format to determine the league champions, while the runner-up and third-place teams get CAF champions league and confederation cup slots, respectively.
