The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it generated N2.05 billion as revenue from passengers, cargo, and other services in the first three months of 2024.

The corporation’s revenue performance is contained in the latest rail transportation data published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for the first quarter (Q1) 2024.

The figure, compared to Q4 2023 (N1.88 billion), shows an increase in NRC’s revenue by 9 percent quarter-on-quarter.

According to the report, the NRC generated N1.42 billion from passengers in the first quarter of 2024, N600.32 million in goods and cargoes and N24.40 million in other receipts.

This gives a total of N2.05 billion generated in the period under review.

Examining the significant freight movement, TheCable Index observed that a total of 160,650 tons of goods were transported via the rail system.

The analysis also revealed that 675,293 passengers travelled via the train system during the period.

On June 5, many passengers were stranded when a Kaduna-bound train from Abuja derailed at Asha station in the federal capital territory (FCT).

A passenger told had TheCable that the train derailed at about 3:52 pm — less than 30 minutes after it departed Kubwa station in Abuja.

Similarly, on May 26, a train that departed Rigasa station in Kaduna for Abuja derailed in a mountainous area near Jere.

Three carriages were said to have gone off the tracks, but there were no casualties.
