The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it is not opposed to the establishment of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.
Musa Faruk, deputy comptroller, who represented Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, commandant general of the NSCDC, said this when he appeared before the senate committee on judiciary on Tuesday.
Lamenting the challenge of inadequate security personnel in the country, Muhammadu said the establishment of the corps would be of help.
“There are inadequate security operatives in Nigeria, so establishing Peace Corps will be helpful,” he said.

“We are not opposed to the establishment of Peace Corps. We have different roles to play with complimentary services.”
On his part, David Umaru, chairman of the committee, said they had invited the army, Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to know if the establishment of the corps will pose a threat to the country.
But he did not disclose the details of the meeting.

The two chambers of the national assembly have passed the bill but with differences.
The bill is at the conference committee stage after which it will be sent to the presidency for assent.
The police had alleged that insurgents had infiltrated the corps which posed a threat to the country’s security.
