Shariff Saleh-Al-Hussaini, chairman of the fatwa committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), says media practitioners should prioritise national interest and promote good governance.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Saleh-Al-Hussaini also cautioned media professionals against publishing reports that could jeopardise the peaceful coexistence in the country.
“The media is the eyes and ears of the society, and therefore they have a responsibility to hold leaders accountable on behalf of the people,” Saleh-Al-Hussaini said.
“The media should be up and doing in setting the agenda for the country and interrogating programmes and policies of government.”

The cleric asked public office holders to respect citizens’ opinions, emphasising God’s wisdom in uniting Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups harmoniously together.
He called on all Nigerians to contribute to national security, unity, peace, and sustainable development for lasting economic growth and prosperity.
Saleh-Al-Hussaini urged Nigerians to deepen their devotion to God, pray for national security and well-being, and transcend tribal and religious differences.

He also expressed gratitude to the management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, for recently conferring an honorary doctorate degree on him.
“The most important lesson on the conferment of an honorary doctorate degree on me by the management of ABU is that our institutions are recognising the contributions of religious leaders to nation-building,” he added.
