NUJ condemns attack on journalists in Edo, says Okpebholo has ordered probe into incident

The council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Edo state has condemned the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) over attacks on reporters.

On Monday, operatives of the DSS reportedly harassed journalists covering the Edo election tribunal. The security officers were said to have prevented reporters from performing their duties.

In a statement on Tuesday by Festus Alenkhe, the Edo NUJ chairman, and Andy Egbon, the union said Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo, has sanctioned an investigation into the incident.

The union commended Okpebholo for addressing the incident, adding that the governor is committed to protecting the rights of journalists.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt intervention, which has sent a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo state,” the statement reads.

“We urge all stakeholders to join hands with Governor Okpebholo in promoting a culture of respect for the media and the fundamental rights of journalists.

“As the governor continues to demonstrate his commitment to protecting the rights of journalists, the NUJ has pledged its support for his administration’s efforts to promote a safe and enabling environment for media practice in Edo state.

“The governor has since directed the security agency to investigate claims by the NUJ accordingly.”

Last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent, non-profit organisation, said at least 56 journalists were attacked during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest.

The group said all the 56 journalists, except one, were harassed by security officers.
