Nurturing Nigeria’s innovators: Infinix, UNESCO, and Google host hands-on robotics workshop at the University of Ibadan

Infinix, a trendy tech brand crafted for young consumers, in partnership with UNESCO and Google, took its mission to foster technological excellence through its CogLabs AI and Robotics Workshop to the students of the University of Ibadan. Hosted at the Infinix-renovated ICT Student Resource Centre, this event built on the success of the Abuja session and marked a significant milestone in empowering Nigerian students to lead innovation in artificial intelligence, robotics, and STEM

Building Robots, Building Futures

The highlight of the workshop was the practical, hands-on robotics sessions, where students not only built their robots using 3D-printed components and repurposed smartphones but also programmed them to respond to commands. With the aid of the CogLabs mobile app, students explored:

  • Training AI models via their smartphones
  • Programming interactive projects using Scratch
  • Gaining foundational knowledge in robotics through guided mentorship

The sessions were led by Joan Nadal, UNESCO Trainer and E3bot Designer, and Eugene Masonde, who brought their expertise and passion for STEM education to the students.

In her opening remarks, Oluwayemisi Ode, Marketing Communications & PR Manager at Infinix Nigeria, stated: “Since the launch of the ICT Resource Centre here at the University of Ibadan, we have worked towards creating an environment that nurtures students’ technical, entrepreneurial, and academic abilities. By hosting the CogLabs workshop, we aim to empower students with the tools and skills they need to thrive in today’s tech-driven world. Nigerians are not just beneficiaries of technology—they are innovators driving tomorrow’s advancements.”

The Journey to Train Future Leaders

The workshop wasn’t just about equipping the next generation of thinkers and makers in Africa with accessible, hands-on experiences in robotics, machine learning, and AI education. It also introduced a trainer milestone program to ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

According to Aduloju Olumide, XClub Community Lead, at Infinix Nigeria, the goal is to create a ripple effect of learning:
“This kick-off training is designed to empower you to become trainers yourselves. Today, over 30 students are being trained, and from these, 20 will be selected to lead workshops independently. We will provide everything you need—venue access, financial support, Infinix phones, robot componenets, and promotional materials—to make your sessions successful. We expect that each of you, as trainers, will go on to train at least one more person, creating a continuous chain of knowledge-sharing.”

A Vision for the Future

As part of this initiative, Infinix aims to replicate these workshops across more institutions in Nigeria, ensuring that more students have access to cutting-edge technology and mentorship. The company also emphasized its commitment to fostering partnerships that bridge the gap between academia and industry, making STEM education more accessible and impactful.

The CogLabs initiative stands as a testament to Infinix’s unwavering commitment to nurture the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders with cutting-edge technology and smart devices. Students left the event not only with new skills but also with the motivation and resources to drive meaningful change in their communities.

Looking Ahead

With strong support from UNESCO, Google, and the University of Ibadan, Infinix is paving the way for a brighter technological future in Nigeria. As students step into their roles as trainers and innovators, the impact of this initiative will continue to grow, fostering creativity and excellence across the nation.
