Nyako: ‘Unseen hands’ trying to impeach me

Embattled governor of Adamawa State, Muritala Nyako, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of masterminding the impeachment proceedings against him and Bala Nglari, his deputy.

On June 18, the Adamawa State house of assembly directed its clerk to serve impeachment notices on Nyako and his deputy. The governor, who travelled to Abuja in order to avoid receiving any impeachment notice, said PDP decided to haunt his deputy for not accepting the decision to return to the party.

Nyako and his deputy were elected on the platform of PDP.

“The meeting of PDP stakeholders in Yola on June 28, 2014, proved beyond all reasonable doubt that the impeachment crisis initiated by the Adamawa State house of assembly is teleguided by some unseen hands in Abuja,” Nyako said via a statement signed by Ahmad Sajoh, his director of press and public affairs.

“The PDP has displayed their usual penchant for forsaking their own. Their attempt to forsake the deputy governor who they had earlier encouraged to abandon the governor and be crowned as their party leader is indeed unfortunate.

“This is rather unfortunate and a clear manifestation of the role of PDP as an unreliable political platform that is ever willing to devour its own to achieve a selfish goal.”

He blamed PDP for flouting the court injunction restricting the house from continuing with the proceedings, saying the party has no regard for the rule of law.

“By disparaging the judiciary in their communique, they have once again proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they have little respect for the judiciary and men and women of the bench.

“A situation where the Speaker of the House went to court to seek a court order and did not get it; then he turned around to disregard the court judgment is really bad. But it is worse when a set of party leaders support such acts of lawlessness. This further proves their lack of respect for the rule of law. And by supporting such an action, the stakeholders have endorsed an illegality.”

Following a meeting of PDP stakeholders in Yola, the PDP issued a communiqué on June 29, endorsing the move of the house to oust the governor.

The communiqué, which was signed by Dr. Umar Ardo, one-time aide to former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, requested support for the impeachment and demanded neutrality from the judiciary.

“That the entire members of the PDP in the state, including the executive committee members of its organs, members of its board of trustees, members of its national executive committee, its stakeholders and elders condemned these acts of gross misconduct on the part of the governor and his deputy, and hence endorse the impeachment initiative and action of the lawmakers,” read a part of it.

“We members hereby commend the house of assembly for this bold initiative and encourage them to continue the impeachment process to its logical conclusion.”
