NYSC accuses Osun local governments of withholding corp members’ stipend

The Osun State chapter of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has accused some local government chairmen in the state of refusing to pay the stipends due to corp members.

Emmanuel Attah, NYSC Osun coordinator, made this allegation on Thursday while speaking at 2018 Batch B Stream II swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede,

“I am constrained to bring before you, the attitude of some of your local government executive chairmen,” he said, referring to Rauf Aregbesola, governor of the state.

“We have lost confidence in them and we are bringing it before you to take action because we can no longer bear it.

“We are bringing the case to you to take immediate action because the NYSC is being shortchanged by these local government chairmen.

“While some council chairmen are remitting theirs to the scheme at the local government level, some deliberately refuse to release money which had been released by Mr Governor to cushion the hardship the scheme is going through.”

Commenting on the allegation, Adelani Bolarinwa, the state commissioner for information, said: “there’s no way Osun state government will know of that at the state level and will not address it instantly unless it is not formally reported.

“And if at all he reported publicly at the swearing-in ceremony, I was not at the function. And if he was reporting that to the governor, it is a matter of investigation which I believe the commissioner in charge of youth empowerment and engagements would have started looking into it.”
