Oando depot fire still on — after 24 hours

The fire explosion at the Oando tank farm located in Ijora-Badiya area of Lagos is still on — 24 hours after it was reported.

Efforts are, however, ongoing by the Lagos state Emergency Management Agency’s response team alongside fire departments from Lagos state fire service; Federal Fire Service; OVH Energy Marketing; Forte Oil; United Bank for Africa (UBA); Julius Berger; Nigeria Ports Authority and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to prevent it from spreading to other tanks in the environment.

Ibrahim Farinloye, acting zonal coordinator, south-west zonal office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said officials of various emergency management agencies were deployed to evacuate staff of Oando and put the situation under control.

Farinloye said the fire started at the depot around 12:05p.m, adding that the agency was not able to immediately determine the cause of the fire.
