Obama: Trump’s immigration policy is ‘faith-based discrimination’

Barack Obama, former US President, has registered his disagreement with the “faith-based, discriminatory” executive order of his successor, Donald Trump.

Trump had on Friday banned seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering the US for 90 days and had also suspended the refugee programme for 120 days.

The executive order affects citizens of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya.

Obama, in a statement released on Monday through his spokesperson, Kevin Lewis, strongly crticised Trump’s immigration policy.

According to Lewis, the former President is “heartened” by the level of engagement taking place across the US, in reference to the nationwide protests in America’s airports against Trump’s order.

“The (former) President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion,” said Lewis.

“Citizens exercising their constitutional right to assemble, organise and have their voices heard by their elected officiald is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake.”

Trump’s travel ban has attracted criticisms from republicans and democrats, world leaders, business leaders, human rights activities and celebrities while a wave of protests have broken out in the US.

A handful of US judge have intervened by ordering the cessation of deportations.

Trump has only been in power for 10 days.
