Obasa re-elected speaker of Lagos assembly

Mudashiru Obasa, immediate past speaker of the Lagos house of assembly, has been re-elected as speaker of the 9th assembly.

The lawmaker, representing Agege constituency 1, was returned unopposed on Friday.

He was nominated by Olanrewaju Oshun, lawmaker representing Lagos Mainland 2 constituency, and seconded by Oluyinka Ogundimu of Agege 1 constituency.

Obasa was elected alongside Wasiu Sanni as deputy speaker.

After taking the oath of office, he announced the other principal officers who would lead the legislative business of the state.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state governor, said he would be inaugurating the 9th assembly in line with the constitution.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the inauguration by Obafemi Hamzat, his deputy, also assured that his administration would work closely with the new lawmakers to deliver their promises to Lagosians.

“As you commence the legislative duties it is important to remind ourselves that we are all accountable to the people of the state,” he said.

“The essence of democracy is checks and balances and seperattion of power. Lagos State has always been a pacesetter and it will continue to remain one.”

Obasa served as chairman of the committee on budget and appropriation in the seventh assembly, before emerging as speaker in the eight assembly.

He is the highest ranking member of the house elected for a record fifth term to the assembly.
